More than twenty Olympic medallists, mentors and additional world-class competitors have put their names to a letter demanding a stop to the capital punishment of a champion boxer and instructor, who is sentenced to die in the nation.

Escalating Worldwide Condemnation

During increasing international outrage over the nation's increasing application of the death penalty as a means of repression, the powerfully expressed appeal censures the government's verdict to confirm the death sentence of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

Vafaei Sani, 30, from the city in the northern province, was taken into custody for participating in national uprisings in two thousand nineteen and indicted of supporting an opposition group. He has passed five years in prison, where he has been tortured and held in seclusion.

The letter noted that the athlete's situation was not an isolated one and underscored Iran’s past of executing competitors for their views, for example Habib Khabiri, skipper of the football side, and a volleyball captain, leader of the national women’s volleyball team. Arrest and Unfair Trial

Based on findings, there is an “death penalty surge in the country, which has attained alarming dimensions”.
