Qatar Short Race and Grand Prix Qualifying: Live Coverage

Opening Notes

The author is about to begin to cover today's sprint race (14:00 GMT) and grid-setting session (18:00 GMT).

Current Events

Starting Lap Period

The formation lap is underway.

Circuit Details

There are nineteen laps around the lengthiest track in Formula 1, David Croft points out.

Final Moments

The final countdown has begun.

Driver Situation

One point in Verstappen's advantage: his teammate Tsunoda is ahead of him by one place. He is unlikely to mess with Red Bull's main man.

Media Conversations

Sky speaking with Sky now: the analyst is with Mercedes.

The analyst is looking forward to the 2026 season, speaking with Adrian Newey about his promotion to the team lead role.

Grid Details

There are only 16 cars on the grid. This followed another bad qualifying for Lewis Hamilton: following his result of twentieth and final in Las Vegas, leading to an eighth position in the main race, he failed to advance of the first qualifying segment once more on Friday. Ferrari have consequently adjusted to his car configuration and so he will start from the pit lane.

Aston Martin's Stroll and the Alpine pair of Pierre Gasly and Colapinto are all doing likewise.

Driver Comments

"We take the learning for tomorrow," says Isack Hadjar, 11th on the grid. Expect a lot of that.

Constructors' Championship

It's not all about the individual championship: McLaren have run away with the team championship but the team, with a 40-point lead over Red Bull, will be hoping to secure the runner-up position during this event. George Russell can assist in this goal from the front row, and Kimi Antonelli will begin immediately after the leader.

Previous Results

Piastri was victorious then – as he managed last year, as well. The driver from McLaren is going for a third consecutive win.

Short Race Importance

Right, just over twenty minutes remaining till the short race gets under way. Barring disaster, it's greatest value is as an indication of what is to come, instead of highly important in its own right, with just eight championship points awarded to the victor. Mind you, second place here was enough for the driver to claim the title two years ago.

Max Verstappen claimed the championship after his teammate's accident of Qatar GP sprint race.
