Space Traveler Reveals Depression Following Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, including increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
