The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining occasions – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of multiple weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing everyone his plans for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions than the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of deaths resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. No former leader would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have contemplated – independently wrecking significant portions of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom have business with public institutions.

As confusing as it is to observe the president try to upend the established notion regarding democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of love into a figure of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Savior that I grew up with, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and because the quickly increasing segment within America may possess limited understanding of him since they are atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of significant worth within Christian narrative.

In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Highest of Us
Hence I have become encouraged to see the persistent defiance against Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as significant comfort to help build the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities within national heritage.

America is best defended, in other words, through connection to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is best defended by relationship to elements that cause it to be distinctive and wonderful, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it imply acting as if the worst regarding America and Christianity was nonexistent; it signifies both meekness and faith, a mixture that serious national faithful should be comfortable with.
