Exactly 30 years since the original Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a major film company and bringing viewers to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a brief look into the storyline but leaving viewers curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys

The preview reveals Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a brand new plaything, one that alarms the familiar toy group. She gets her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser avoids is why Woody is back with his companions in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping prize toys find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And where is the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), entrusting her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the insignia pinned to her outfit.

It is hoped she is still the driving force among the toys.
